Math
This month we are officially in Unit 6: Numbers 0-20. In this unit, students count and represent collections of objects and images within 20. They apply previously developed counting concepts, such as one-to-one correspondence, keeping track of what has been counted, and conservation of numbers, to larger numbers. Previously, students counted, composed, and decomposed numbers up to10. They used counters, connecting cubes, 5-frames, 10-frames, drawings, their fingers, and other tools. They also wrote expressions to record compositions and decompositions. Please continue to practice with your child at home and utilize the materials on the Google Classroom.
Literacy
This month in reading, we will begin Module 7 of Into Reading. The Module’s essential question will be “What can I learn when I look closely?” It will focus on Kindergarteners as natural explorers. Genre focuses will be biographies and informational texts. They will work on listening comprehension, making inferences, describing connections, evaluating details, and author’s purpose. Print concepts that they will review are end punctuation. You can support this at home by continuing to read with your child, ask them higher-level thinking questions, and taking them to the library to explore the genres that we are focusing on in this module. In Writing this month, students will be writing creative narratives and poetry. They will continue to utilize the writing process to write their pieces and publish them. In this module they will also learn how to call upon their five senses to write more vivid stories and poems. In grammar, we will continue with prepositions. This module will focus on “on, off, & by”. They will also learn what is an exclamation mark and when to use it. You can support this at home by continuing to encourage your children to write more independently. They are more than capable of sounding out words on their own and writing what they hear. Remember, we are not looking for perfect spelling, but we do what to see them phonetically spelling and writing their sight words correctly.
Phonics
This month in phonics we will begin Unit 4 in Fundations. In this unit we will be continuing to add “Trick Words” to our list. We will also be embarking into the world of digraphs! The children will learn the concept of consonant digraphs ch, th, sh, wh, and ck. They will work on decoding and spelling three sound words with these digraphs, as well as using the spelling of “ck” and the end of words. You can support this at home by continuing to review the slides that we put on our Google Classroom and practicing these skills with your child.
Science
This month in Science, we will be closing out our unit on Pushes and Pulls. We will begin to look at the season of Spring, comparing it to winter. We will discuss the changes that will occur in nature and in our own lives. We will also learn about Earth Day, tying it into lessons about recycling, reusing, and reducing. We will learn how we can do more to protect our environment. We will also begin our unit on Plants and Living Things. You can support this at home by taking a walk around your neighborhood, noticing what changes are happening as we transition into this new season.
Social Studies
In Social Studies this month we will continue with Unit 3: Geography, People, and the Environment. We will focus on communities, neighborhoods, maps, and transportation. We will also learn about the 5 boroughs of NYC and what makes each one special. You can support this at home by discussing what places you have visited in each borough.
